9 September 2022 – Burgess and Allen
Burgess and Allen started singing together as a duo over seven years ago, after a chance encounter at Levin Folk Club. Combining their different musical backgrounds to forge a harmonic entity that is invigorating as it is diverse. Simon and Gill have featured performing together at clubs, weddings, festivals, and cafe venues here and overseas. Their material is drawn from all genres, they sing both popular gems and lesser known treasures with soothing assonance and melodic strength.
Gill started her musical career at 9 years old as an accomplished junior classical pianist. Her adoption of the guitar at a later age led to a desire to write her own material and present it in public. She completed her CD ‘Colour outside the Lines’ in 2012, where she lyrically paints emotionally candid musical canvases. Simon’s multi-instrumentalist versatility has seen him teaching, singing, playing, and recording in both large and small ensembles on a variety of different instruments, limited only by how many he can carry to the gig.
Their song choices reflect their aspirations to present quality arrangements and meaningful concert experiences for their audiences. This includes a range of Americana and Folk or Contemporary music but can include Gill’s contemplative compositions or Simon’s topical ramblings. They both enjoy expanding musical experiences through ongoing collaborations and associations with other artists.
The folk music club meets at the Horowhenua Scottish Society Hall, Bartholomew Road. Doors open at 7:00 pm and the evening begins at 7:30pm with a blackboard, followed by supper and then the guest artist. Admission, which includes a light supper, is $5 for members, $10 non-members and $3 for students. Cash only (no eftpos facilities).
