UPDATE:   ANNETTE ESQUINET AND STEPH CASEY PERFORM JULY 10

Hello to all our folk club members and friends,

I am happy to report that our first concert night post COVID19 was a great success, and we all coped with the remaining restrictions. It now seems clear that we can relax a little and will no longer be compelled to social distancing, limited numbers and such things.

Our concert on July 10th will feature Adam McGrath, a very talented singer songwriter. Adam has toured and played with everyone from Fleetwood Mac  to Steve Earle to Paul Kelly to Old Crow Medicine. Described by RNZ as “a national treasure “, Adam McGrath is at home with bluegrass, blues, country and rock ‘n roll as much as he is with folk, and is known for the intensity, passion, love and humour of his performances.

As the June concert proved so successful, with the main event beginning at 7.30 pm, we are going to repeat this timing.  In the cold winter season many people appreciated the earlier start, and those who wanted to go home early were able to do so. Our July concert coincides with the Mid-Winter Holler at Tatum Park, which several of our members plan to attend, so an earlier departure for this event will be appreciated by them.

We will also reduce the supper time available.  Hot tea or coffee will be available, but many of the participants at the June concert felt that it was unnecessary to have the kind of supper we have supplied for the last few years.  The team producing supper were relieved to be freed up somewhat and to not have a lot of preparation before the concert or cleanup to do at the end of the night.  Hopefully a simpler supper will encourage other club members to help out, even if only for one concert night in the year.

We are looking at the volunteers’ tasks again and would like to ask you to consider helping in some way. A schedule of tasks for the rest of this year will  be passed around at the July concert, and we would appreciate it if any able-bodied members could put their names down in at least one slot, or talk to one of the committee members about how you would be prepared to assist.

Bob & Kate

Bob & Kate

Advance notice of our August 14th  concert  – Bob Cooper-Grundy and Kate Marshall.  This concert will return to the former timing, with the guests’ concert following the Blackboard, as these guests are travelling from further afield. More details in the next email.

Happily Dale is hosting a House Concert this month, featuring Ronel Hunter, (whose LFMC concert had to be postponed with the pandemic lockdown.)  This concert will be held on Sunday 19th July at 3.- 5.30 pm. Ronel is a lovely singer/songwriter who plays contemporary originals and covers. She writes songs about real life and her focus is on the story a song has to tell. Please reserve your seat with dalewebb143@gmail.com or text 027 2079695.  Koha is $10 pp plus a small plate to share, and Dale invites you to feel free to arrive early to mingle and grab yourself a comfy chair.

AGM

AGM

Our AGM for this year will be held on Wednesday August 12th in the Scottish Hall at 7.30pm. Please consider whether you would like to nominate anyone for the role of Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary or Committee member.  Nomination forms will be available at the next Concert night on July 10th and will also be attached to the email to members giving official notice of the AGM which you should receive in early July.

Keep cosy and enjoy lots of good music in these cold winter months.

The doors will open at 7:00 pm as usual, but the evening will commence at 7:30 pm with the Guest Performer followed by a limited Blackboard list.

Note that you will need to sign in with your name and contact details.
Door staff will wear gloves and hand sanitiser will be available.
Chairs will be sanitized and set out in advance in rows.
There will be no tables so as to allow room for social distancing.
No supper will be provided, although if you want to bring your own refreshments and utensils (glasses, etc.) you may do so.
The Kitchen will be closed – except in the case of a fire emergency – and no equipment will be available from there.
The musicians’ Lounge will be available only to guest performers.
Anyone wishing to perform after the main Concert on the limited Blackboard list can place their musical instruments on the Hall’s wooden side seating.

Bill Hickman & Dusty Burnell – Early Concert

Bill Hickman & Dusty Burnell – Early Concert

BILL HICKMAN and DUSTY BURNELL – STARTS 7:30 PM  JUNE 12

**PLEASE NOTE NEW FORMAT FOR CONCERT**

Bill Hickman was born in Kaikohe but has spent most of his life in Wellington NZ. He has been playing guitar and writing songs in an eclectic range of groups and styles for the last 20 years. Bill is a committed performer who conveys the intensity and grit of his songwriting with a relaxed, upbeat approach that reflects the redemptive spirit evident on his debut Ep. ‘Ghost of Smoke’ followed by his “Crossroads” album in 2019.  This album celebrates all that is Bill: lyrical intensity; blending alt-country and roots music influences with his harder-edged musical back story; Bill’s strong gravel dragged voice and country inflected acoustic guitar.

For those who are meeting Bill for the first time, if the smokier, darker edge of alt-country is where you like to dwell, if the likes of Steve Earle, Michael Stipe, Bruce Springsteen or Elvis Costello feature heavily on your favourite playlist then it’s time to meet Bill Hickman.

Cameron ‘Dusty’ Burnell joins Bill on stage with his blistering mandolin, lap steel and amazing voice.  Together they are a powerful, intense duo, well worth seeing!

The Concert begins early at 7:30 pm with a limited blackboard slated for after intermission.  This is a change brought by Covid 19 guidelines, and allows for a shorter span of togetherness if desired.  The committee has given significant thought to the wellness of our member audience, details of which will be forthcoming in June.  Please bear with us as we restart our much enjoyed musical activities.

Note that you will need to sign in with your name and contact details.
Door staff will wear gloves and hand sanitiser will be available.
Chairs will be sanitized and set out in advance.
There will be no tables so as to allow room for social distancing.
No supper will be provided, although if you want to bring your own refreshments and utensils (glasses, etc.) you may do so.
The Kitchen will be closed – except in the case of a fire emergency – and no equipment will be available from there.
The musicians’ Lounge will be available only to guest artistes.
Anyone wishing to perform after the main Concert on the limited Blackboard list can place their musical instruments on the Hall’s wooden side seating.
Microphones and music stands will be sanitised between performers.

The door charge will be the same as usual: $5.00 Members, $10.00 non-Members.  Please have the correct amount available so that there is no requirement for change.
Should anyone wish to pay their $25.00 Subs for the 1st July 2020 – 30th June 2021 Financial Year at this time Val will be available to take payments;  once again, please have the correct amount available so that there is no requirement for change.  Or you could use internet banking, using your name as the reference.

COVID UPDATE

COVID UPDATE

Greetings to all members and friends of our Levin Folk Music Club. Your committee hope that you are keeping well and taking care of one another as best you can.

Regrettably we will have to cancel our May concert, as we are still in lockdown at this stage. We will keep you informed about the possibility of a June concert a little nearer that date. The committee are hoping to have a meeting soon after May 11th to work out what could be done. In the mean time we hope that you are all managing to keep plenty of music in your lives, whether that be by practising your own skills, or watching the many performances available via technology.

Keep well and keep safe, as we all wonder what the “new normal” might be!

Caramellos Acoustic Trio Feb 14

Caramellos Acoustic Trio Feb 14

Tim L Brown and his acoustic trio bring us the blues, from traditional to contemporary, using an amazing variety of instruments.  His 11 piece band has been getting wonderful reviews around the country – but is perhaps too large for our club!  Still, this will be a very entertaining introduction to this local band.

Also, to start the evening, we invite musicians to sing love songs (of a non-soppy nature) to celebrate St Valentine’s Day (and Dianne’s birthday).  Come along for a great start to the New Year.

$10 or $5 members (half yearly memberships are $12.50, from Feb-June 30).  Pick up some raffles, enjoy the lovely supper and meet others.

Skiffy Rivets in October

Skiffy Rivets in October

Skiffy Rivets in concert at Levin Folk Music Club – October 11, 2019

Skiffy Rivets on stage

Skiffy Rivets on stage

With The Skiffy Rivets, harmonies are not something used just for choruses, they are a full time job for the three hard-working vocalists. Rather, it is the audience who are likely to find themselves beefing up the choruses, as the Skiffy Rivets reach out with their unique blend of songs borrowed from Americana, bluegrass, folk, and swing.

This month the Levin Folk Music Club gets a special preview show before the Skiffy Rivets appearance at the Wellington Folk Festival at Labour Weekend.

Creating the fun musical blend are singers Holly Carrington, Sue Tearne, and Pete Parnham who also provides the backdrop of guitar and slide guitar. As the set progresses, guest Cathy Dyer will also add her upright bass to the mix.

A Skiffy Rivets set never dwells for long in one place, as they shift gears and genres effortlessly with songs that will move you, make you laugh, have you singing and tapping your toes and wishing you’d brought your dancing shoes.

The Skiffy Rivets’ live studio CD Elbow Room has the same effect, with it becoming many listeners saying it is their favourite road trip CD – always making the miles go faster and putting a smile on their face. www.skiffyrivetsmusic.com

Doors open at 7pm, $10 public/$5 members.  Supper is included and there are raffles for grocery vouchers/concert tickets.  Musicians wanting to play one song on the blackboard should give their name to the compere at 7pm.
