30th Anniversary

30th Anniversary

A brief history of Levin Folk Music Club as we celebrate 30 years of live acoustic folk music in Levin.

Rona with Danny

Rona with Danny

It all began in 1989 with Shenanigans coffee bar in Levin.  People would meet and sing at Danny’s place on a Sunday night. When Shenanigans closed, a small group (Eddie, Evie, Roy, Maree, Danny, Jim and Rona) got together to keep the music going and so the Levin Folk Music Club began.  Their first meeting place was in the Levin Waiopehu Tramping Club rooms off Parker Avenue.

In February 1992, with the Club growing in popularity, it moved to the Jaycee Lounge, above Leader and Watt in Oxford Street.  For nearly ten years, every month except January, the Club hosted musicians from New Zealand and overseas and provided an informal place where people could perform and enjoy music.

In November 2001, the Club moved to the Horowhenua Scottish Society Hall in Bartholomew Road.  Those involved for many years in setting up the hall, organising guest artists, welcoming at the door, refreshments, sound, newsletters and publicity have included Eddie, Evie, Han, Rona, Jeremy, Anne, Andrew, Tony, Shirley, Charlie, John, Brian F, Brian McK, and numerous other early supporters.  In 2011, under the steering committee of Chris, Ian, Andrew, Anne, Han, Barbara and Jill, with Colin as Chair, the Levin Folk Music Club became an incorporated society.

The Club has continued to grow with guest performers and local musicians sharing their interest and talents, encouraged and booked by Anne, Rona, Barb and now Dale.  Committee members (2019-20) comprising Val & John, Cavan, Jean, Dean and Dianne ensure the concert nights are run well, and the Club continues to be a warm, encouraging place of acoustic music.   A second night in the month has developed into an “acoustic/club” night under the supportive guidance of Kevin, Colin and Paul.

Bob & Kate

Bob & Kate

Bob Cooper-Grundy and Kate Marshall are based in the Wairarapa but play gigs regularly around the southern half of the North Island. The song list veers between swing sounds of Texas, mixed with the blues, bluegrass, something approaching jazz and some Pop songs served up in the Bob and Kate way.

Bob Cooper-Grundy has pursued obscurity now for some 40 odd years, having played with some famous people in London including the drummers of The Pogues and the Woodentops. He enjoys playing blues guitar and singing country songs.

Kate Marshall plays violin, accordion and flute and sings quite beautifully. She started with classical piano and singing in choirs and you don’t have to listen that carefully to hear Bach and Mozart lurking behind Bob Wills and Memphis Minnie.

They have played at most of the folk clubs in the Wellington area, at the Wellington, Auckland and Dunedin Folk Festivals and at Jazz in Martinborough.  You can catch them at many cafes and pubs in the region. Check out their Bob and Kate facebook page for details.  Adding Neil Billington’s astonishing harmonica playing to the mix puts the emphasis on the Blues and provides even more opportunities for swapping ideas and stealing licks.

Bob, Kate and Neil met at music festivals where they would sit around jamming and enjoying each others music and improvisations. These jam sessions often became long musical conversations as the quickwitted musicians tried to outdo or steal ideas from one another. If one of them was performing and spotted the others in the audience, eyes would light up and a sudden guest spot would appear on the bill! Most recently they have played together at a cajun restaurant in Wellington, the Mayfair in Upper Hutt and most recently  at Jazz in Martinborough.
